2021年1月7日，马来西亚海洋空间规划合作研究项目启动暨第一次研讨会在厦门大学翔安校区举行。福建海洋可持续发展研究院（以下称：海研院）、海域海岛环境科技研究院（天津）有限公司、马来西亚登嘉楼大学海洋与环境研究院（线上参会）分别派代表出席会议。
会上，项目负责人薛雄志教授首先欢迎了各方代表并简要介绍了海研院的定位、研究领域等。随后，马来西亚登嘉楼大学海洋与环境研究院院长Fadzil教授详细介绍了该研究院的情况，包括其研究团队、研究领域等。马来西亚登嘉楼大学海洋与环境研究院是马来西亚第一个专注海洋研究与研究生人才培养的卓越中心。之后，海域海岛环境科技研究院（天津）有限公司负责人徐伟研究员介绍了公司概况与相关海洋空间规划项目。
薛雄志教授随后简要介绍了项目情况，阐述了项目的依托基础，及中国海岸带空间规划的成功案例。与会三方就下一步工作计划和时间节点进行了讨论。
此次会议，三方就马来西亚海洋空间规划合作研究项目的细节进行了有效沟通，为项目的顺利开展做好了铺垫。

On Jan 7th, 2021, the kickoff meeting for Joint Study on Marine Spatial Planning in Malaysia was held at Xiamen University Xiang’an Campus. The meeting was attended by members from Xiamen University (XMU), Ocean Environment Science and Technology Co., Ltd. (OEST) and Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (via VooV).
Prof. Xue Xiongzhi, Director of the SCD Program, welcomed all participants for attending the meeting and started the first session by introducing Fujian Institute of Sustainable Oceans and its research scope. Dr. Fadzil, Director of Coastal & Ocean Dynamics Research Group, INOS followed to give a brief introduction on INOS, which is a premier center of excellence in Malaysia that focuses its activities on oceanic and marine related research, as well as post-graduate training. Mr. Xu Wei, Researcher of OEST, introduced the company and the MSP projects that they had previously conducted.
Prof. Xue then introduced the MSP project. He illustrated on the technical capabilities to design and implement the project, and introduced successful MSP cases in China. The parties then dived into discussions about next steps and key milestones.
Through the kickoff meeting, the parties had an effective communication on the details of the project, which laid a solid foundation for its smooth implementation.
