FISO Team Visited Malaysia for Academic Exchanges

(International Conference on Marine Science and Aquaculture,简称ICOMSA)。

From May 12 to May 18, 2024, Prof. Xue Xiongzhi, Dean of the Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans of Xiamen University (FISO), led a team to Malaysia for academic exchanges. The team visited the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and attended the International Conference on Marine Science and Aquaculture (ICOMSA).

The team first went to Penang, Malaysia to visit CEMACS and paid field trips to the coastal areas. Prof. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai, Director of CEMACS and Mr. Sim Yee Kwang, Science/Research Officer of CEMACS, hosted FISO team. Each side presented an overview of their institutes, including focused areas, missions and visions, etc. The parties then engaged in discussions on marine spatial planning, integrated coastal management, capacity building, etc. for potential collaborations. Mr. Sim mentioned the abundance of seagrass meadows in the Penang Strait which is rare in the tropical areas, and that CEMACS team is working to promote the establishment of a marine protected area (MPA) for seagrass meadows in this area. However, multi-sector stakeholder consensus is urgently needed, and the CEMACS team hopes to collaborate with FISO in related fields. After discussion, the team took FISO team for a tour in the center, visiting its aquaculture, specimen and exhibition areas, which shows impressive facilities and efficient collaboration between different areas in CEMACS.

The team then went to Kota Kinabalu to attend the International Conference on Marine Science and Aquaculture (ICOMSA). ICOMSA started as an annual seminar in 2003 initiated by the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) together with longstanding collaborators from Kindai University, Japan, as a platform to collaborate on research projects and share scientific findings in the field of marine science and aquaculture. The theme of the conference was “Ocean Futures: Advancing Sustainable Marine Science and Aquaculture for a Changing World”. Prof. Xue and his student Mr. Liu Xiaoxiang, shared their research result titled “Construction and Application of a Coastline Ecological Index: A Case Study of Fujian Province, China”. The research utilizes remote sensing technology to establish the Coastline Ecological Index (CEI), which is applied to Fujian’s coastline to assess its conditions between 1992 and 2022.

During this visit to Malaysia, the FISO team engaged in exchanges with the CEMACS team, research institutions at UMS, and participants of ICOMSA. Focusing on capacity building for sustainable coastal development, the parties explored opportunities for cooperation, laying a foundation for future collaboration.
