On April 27, 2026, the Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans (hereinafter referred to as “FISO”) held an annual progress review meeting for international students supported by the Xiamen University Sustainable Coastal Development Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the “SCD Scholarship”), which is operated by FISO. Nine scholarship recipients from ASEAN countries — including five doctoral students and four master’s students — presented updates on their academic works, research progress, thesis topics, and future plans. The meeting was attended by Professor Xue Xiongzhi, Dean of FISO, together with members from FISO’s administration office.
The meeting aimed to review the students’ academic and research progress while exploring a comprehensive cultivation mechanism integrating “funding, monitoring, feedback, and capacity enhancement,” thereby promoting a transition from financial support to broader capacity building. During the presentations, the scholarship recipients demonstrated strong academic performance and active engagement in research, with research topics focusing on frontier issues in sustainable coastal development. Several students have already achieved preliminary research outcomes and participated in international academic exchanges. Many expressed their intention to pursue further studies after graduation or contribute to marine scientific cooperation between China and ASEAN countries upon returning to their home countries. Following the presentations, Professor Xue Xiongzhi commended the students for their impressive research topics and looked forward to potential academic collaborations. He also encouraged them to share their ideas and suggestions at any time to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation.
The SCD Scholarship Program is not merely a source of financial assistance, but also a platform for advancing capacity building in marine sustainable development across ASEAN countries. Using international students as a bridge, the program promotes deeper cooperation between China and ASEAN countries in areas such as blue carbon, mangrove conservation, and the sustainable utilization of marine biological resources, while cultivating high-level marine professionals with global perspectives. Moving forward, FISO will continue to leverage the resources of the “Sustainable Coastal Development Capacity-Building Research Lab” to further integrate the scholarship program with public goods initiatives such as the Capacity Index of Sustainable Coastal Development for Countries along the Maritime Silk Road, thereby supporting the development of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and promoting sustained regional connectivity and integration in talent cultivation and networks.
